I took this HDR photograph yesterday as I was driving through Walden NY. The snow melt is at it’s peak and the water is raging!! I wanted to get this shot last year, but it just didn’t work out
This year though I got it
I used the Canon 5D mark II and the 24-105 f/4L. The camera was set to f/18 which is higher than I normally go, but I wanted to slow the shutter speed enough to get a nice blur effect on the water. The best way to do that is by using a neutral density filter to fool the camera eye into thinking it’s darker out, but that was in my car and up a treacherous climb I just came down
f/18 will do the job! I took 3 exposures at -2, 0, +2 and here is the result.

Walden NY - Rapids
Here is a link to Bing maps Birds eye view of the Dam. I’m not sure if it still puts out power, but it seems like it might

Michele and I had the pleasure to attend the St. James Camera Club of Goshen, NY as a Guest speaker.
We did a presentation on HDR Photography and discussed the theory behind it with some examples. Dick was nice enough to lend his awesome PC to do the PDF presentation on the projector
Thanks! We then fallowed up the slideshow presentation with an actual live demonstration of how to take an HDR photograph. We all went from the activities room into the actual Church. I then set up the tripod and took a bunch of exposure’s to capture all the dynamic range in the very dimly lit Church. I set the camera to manual mode, ISO 100, f/14, Average metering mode, 4 exposure’s.
Below are the 5 exposure’s I used as well as the final edited HDR Photograph
I also wanted to thank everybody from the Club for being so kind and warm to us. A special thanks to Renee for inviting us to speak

Fully edited HDR composite
Here are the 3 raw exposure’s I used for the HDR composite above:

f/14 @ 25 seconds

f/14 @ 6 seconds

f/14 @ 1.6 seconds

I was driving around the other day and came across these sleeping giants
I’m a huge fan of pretty much all machinery, but I particularly love excavating equipment!
It was really muddy, but luckily it was early enough in the morning that the mud was still mostly frozen. Only the top 1/2 inch or so was soft.
From the photography perspective I really wanted to make these Giants seem as big as possible so I opted for my wide angle lens
The Canon 17-40 f/4L and the Canon 5D Mark II alone with my Manfrotto Tr-pod.
These are all HDR images comprised of 3 exposure’s. f/16 @ -2,0,+2, and I used Abobe Photoshop and Photomatix Pro to process the images.

Best,
Jay

I love the 1309, and this just had to be converted to BW with a hint of Sepia
You can see all the images from the Museum Here:
