Our Friend Kelly

Jason Hermann

Our friend Kelly from Kelly Lyle Photography came for a visit from Illinois this weekend and all I can say is WOW.  We had a killer time and what an amazing person Kelly is on so many levels. Photographer, Teacher, Father, Husband, genius of composition, and for me – A Mentor :)

Kelly

I met Kelly a few years ago on a photography website.  We were both new to the forum and eager to learn as much about photography as possible.  It just so happens I commented on 1 of Kelly’s wedding threads and we immediately became friends on the board. Over the years we have gotten closer and closer to Kelly, and Michele and I convinced him to come to NY for a visit!!   Kelly has this incredible ability to make everyone around him smile, even on a photography forum. He can write in such away that you feel like he is right there talking to you.  It could be said he just has a great personality, but I think it is way more than that.  You can just look at Kelly and tell he is a kind person, and Michele and I were certainly touched by his visit and friendship :)

Our weekend was great!  It consisted of picking Kelly up at Newark airport on Friday, shortly followed by a stop at the Horizon Dinner on the way home.  To our surprise we meet a hilarious waiter at the dinner who was an older gentleman with a laundry list of stories and wise cracks that had us laughing and talking about him all weekend.  Kelly was telling Michele and I stories about his family, teaching experiences, and of course photography.

Saturday’s plan was to head down to the studio and take some pics, as well as print some stuff for Kelly on our Archival printer.  Needles to say we had an awesome time at the studio and we learned a ton from Kelly!!! We also got some Killer pics playing around in the studio and out back.

We also printed 1 of Kelly’s photos from a recent Wedding he shot in Finland.  Check out this work of art!!

Sunday we all slept in a bit and then headed down to BHphoto in New York City.  What an awesome store!!!  You can actually play with whatever you want including the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS and the Canon EF 85mm f 1.2 L.  Michele and I checked out back packs, tri-pods, pelican camera cases, video equipment ect…  The staff was also extremely helpful and knowledgeable in all the areas we checked out.

We then headed over to a park I found online at the base of the Manhatten Bridge in Brooklyn, NY.  Our Goal was to get some awesome pictures of the Brooklyn bridge!!

Here is the link if you want to check it out ;)    Park

We got some sick pictures of the Brookyln Bridge as well as the manhatten bridge :)   This image is a 3 frame pano all taken with a 30second exposure.

Fresh Tulips from Miss Abagail

Jason Hermann

Michele brought these home a few days ago from Flowers By Miss Abagail located in Rock Hill, NY ;)   Gorgeous to say the least and Natural window light was the pat I chose for these images.  I also used a 25MM extension tube on the EF 24-105 f/4 L and Canon 5D mark II.  I set the flowers up on the kitchen table next to the sliding glass doors and then placed my tripod on the table as low as it would go ;)    Then I got really close switched to manual focusing and fired a few frames.  Editing wise, these raw file photos were only adjusted in Adobe Lightroom then exported as jpeg.  I did a little contrast, white balance, sharpening, and vignette in lightroom.

Walden NY – HDR

Jason Hermann

I took this HDR photograph yesterday as I was driving through Walden NY.   The snow melt is at it’s peak and the water is raging!!  I wanted to get this shot last year, but it just didn’t work out ;)   This year though I got it :)   I used the Canon 5D mark II and the 24-105 f/4L.  The camera was set to f/18 which is higher than I normally go, but I wanted to slow the shutter speed enough to get a nice blur effect on the water.  The best way to do that is by using a neutral density filter to fool the camera eye into thinking it’s darker out, but that was in my car and up a treacherous climb I just came down :)   f/18 will do the job!  I took 3 exposures at -2, 0, +2 and here is the result.

Incredible Artist – Dana Hawk

Jason Hermann

Michele and I had the pleasure to meet and work with Dana on Saturday evening to do some digitizing work for her, as well as Giclee printing. We digitized a Huge 36×36 inch canvas oil painting that was gorgeous, and printed 1 of her other pieces on our super high quality archival canvas.

Dana’s style is like nothing Michele and I have seen!  The detail, color, composition, and interpretations are just amazing on all fronts.  Here is 1 of the Paintings we had the pleasure to work with, but please go check out Dana’s Website to see more of here incredible Art and style.
